Bats are the only mammals that can fly. About 70 percent of bats are insectivores. Some of the smaller bat species are important pollinators of flowers and several plants are now dependent on them, to spread their seeds. The social structure of bats varies. Some species of bats lead a solitary life, while others live in colonies of hundreds or thousands of bats.
Bats are vectors for a large number of parasites and diseases including rabies, SARS Henipavirus, and possibly ebola virus. Many species also appear to have a high tolerance for harboring pathogens and often do not develop symptoms when infected. Although you should not have an unreasonable fear of bats, avoid handling them or living with them, as with any wild animal.
